How the construction of King Abdullah Sports City stadium took place

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia completed the King Abdullah Sports City stadium in 2014, marking a major milestone in the development of the country’s sports infrastructure and the realization of its Vision 2030. Initiated by royal decree in 2009, the ambitious project has become a symbol of modern engineering thinking, continuing centuries of sporting traditions – from the early days of equestrianism and fencing to the popularity of football today.

The centerpiece of the complex is a 60,000-seat football stadium that is fully compliant with FIFA requirements. Saudi Aramco entrusted the project management to the international company Arcadis, which combined the best international practices in the fields of design, procurement and construction. Since beginning in early 2012, work has progressed at a tremendous pace, and at its peak, more than 8,000 workers were on site, working in two 12-hour shifts. Completion of construction for the King's Cup in 2014 was proof of the high efficiency of international cooperation and strict quality control of the work.

The new King Abdullah Sports City sports complex is not limited to a football field. It includes an athletics stadium, football fields, tennis courts and other sports facilities designed to encourage an active lifestyle and maintain the health of the nation. Saudi Arabia's leaders see this as a shining example of how modern innovations can be used to achieve economic and social well-being for citizens, and how sport is becoming a powerful driver of change.

Now that construction has been successfully completed, residents of the country are eagerly awaiting the opportunity to attend the event, as it will be possible, in particular, to buy tickets for the iconic sporting event, which will become a vivid demonstration of the Kingdom's new achievements.
